MIRAGE OF DEMOCRACY
Agenda Item
The Mirage of Democracy
The “Mirage of Democracy” special committee covers Turkish democracy’s turbulent years from 1946 to 1960. It features three cabinets: Democrat Party (DP), Republican People’s Party (CHP), and Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), across four election periods: 1946-50, 1950-54, 1954-57, and 1957-60. DP focuses on development, while CHP tries to sabotage it openly and secretly. TSK, with varied ideologies, debates early on and becomes more active post-1954. Daily joint election sessions include candidate announcements, speeches, debates, and votes via open or secret ballots. The ruling party can manipulate elections differently depending on the ballot type. The 1946 and 1950 elections each have one preparation and one voting session.
